Greg then tells Rowley to pull him back up to his feet, but Rowley misheard and thought Greg said to pull him by his feet, which he does, getting Greg wet. Opposed to the idea of cheating, Rowley suggests that they study separately, and Greg slips a mean note between the dividers.But Greg hates it, pointing out that it's all about Rowley rather than him, leading him to tell Rowley to trim anything about him.

Greg again retorts that both ideas are dumb, and says that he can do anything with his diary, especially make Rowley into a different character--named Rupert, and also dumb and drooling. Kinney later developed it into a full-length book, becoming Rowley Jefferson's Journal, because he enjoyed writing it. They are warned to stay silent for the rest of the night, which sits fine with Rowley, who wants to sleep anyway.
