She sets herself the task of creating all her Christmas cards and presents on a budget, working out how to get the postage money she needs for Betty Moody's gift and keeping the family Christmas Spirit alive. During that time she focused on raising the profile of illustration as a sophisticated art form for all ages. I did not know that this book existed and so when I ran across it I immediately bought it and read it well in advance of the Christmas season. I bought this as a gift - but read it as I wanted to check its suitability ( and make sure there were no Christmas spoilers). She finds little things to do to serve others, and discovers that the Christmas spirit is not in the gifts you receive, but in showing others you care.

I was so surprised to find this on the shelf that I instantly snapped it up and didn’t regret it once. I hope Lauren Child will be writing more in the series as it is wonderful to have the adorable Clarice Bean back for more adventures. It was so good for me, I think I will read it in October every year as a little warm up for the Christmas season and to give myself a boost to keep the Christmas Spirit from evaporating.

Still, there’s a lot to do even to prepare for a Christmas for seven, whether that’s remembering to send off Granny’s parcel to New York, taking singing lessons for the Christmas concert, making fudge or helping Clarice’s friend Karl walk his dogs – and source a perfect wooden spoon. The illustrations are darling but I found the font to be difficult to read in some places and the storyline seemed to meander all over the place. Her books have been made into an award-winning TV series and have sold in many languages with runaway success.

When Emma’s turkey goes missing, her neighbours join forces to ensure she has an extra special Christmas day. Clarice weiß, es ist Weihnachten, wenn die Wichtelgeschirrtücher ausgepackt werden und die Weihnachtskarten eintrudeln. It’s a lovely children’s book aimed at I would say 7-13 years old’s, written in a cheerful way, including plenty of gorgeous illustrations. The illustrations and the writing style were acutely creative, unique and playful and I enjoyed the different style fonts and sizes. So many Christmas books are picture books, and I love them, but to have a middle-grade Christmas book, well, that's a treasure.

Clarice Bean: Think Like an Elf: The utterly joyful and sparkling new Clarice Bean Christmas story from Lauren Child: The utterly joyful and sparkling Clarice Bean Christmas story from Lauren Child. All the characters and dialogue are well judged and it’s a perfect read aloud in the run up to Christmas as it simply sparkles with humour and kindness ( even if , as in real life, sometimes the kindness leads to a very different conclusion than may have been expected). Except this year it is going to be a quiet-ish Christmas in her house, which doesn’t feel right because Christmas is all about noisiness and being full up and FAMILY. I’m happy to report that not only was it entirely suitable I found myself laughing out loud at some of the perfectly painted family moments - and very pleased by the happy ending.
