The writing is smooth and constantly progressive, the characters are a great cast of entertainers, including Van Helsing, Frankenstein (who I happen to be a big fan of. But I eventually adjusted to it and even came to appreciate the fact this might be a gateway book for younger readers to seek out the original stories if they were curious enough.

I understood (and appreciated) their purpose, but I think there had to have been a smoother way to accomplish it. The Goldsboro exclusive edition of "Empire of the Damned" by Jay Kristoff will feature block sprayed. The basic premise revolves around one simple question: What if Bram Stoker's Dracula had not been a work of fiction? There are promo videos online for both editions, I have popped them both at the end of this post - I'll leave it to you to decide which one you prefer. The Rising is a fast, furious, can’t-turn-away thrill ride that will suck readers in just like a video game. Of course, many of these scenes involve Jamie, Frank et al battling against the evil vampiric hordes, but thanks to the imagination of the author they have a lot more than wooden stakes in their armoury. The department is still active now and the novel's main character, Jamie Carpenter, finds out about its existence when his mother disappears. These are certainly not the insipid, vacuous blood suckers that we have had to endure in recent years - Will Hill has drawn on the nastiest examples of these creatures to create his monsters for his inspiration, and in doing so has reclaimed the vampire from the girly, fawning Twilight brigade.

This cannot be the case, as the book takes place in October 2009, meaning that she should have been turned for 5 years and 3 months at this point, if the date given in Chapter 28 is correct. The author has taken a lot of the classic figures, like Van Helsing, Dracula, Mina Harker, and Frankenstein, and woven a new story around them.So you were a puss who got picked on by bullies all your life, but all of a sudden, you're a vampire killing machine? The organization was founded by Van Helsing and several powerful people to stop the plague spread by Count Dracula. I am interested to see what happens so will eventually continue on to book two but it won't be at the top of my TBR.

I would not be surprised if many kids who have not yet discovered the joys of Dracula and Frankenstein will actually be encouraged to pick up these books for the first time following a reading of Department 19 . Department Nineteen takes us through history, across Europe, and beyond - from the cobbled streets of Victorian London to prohibition-era New York, from the icy wastes of Arctic Russia to the treacherous mountains of Transylvania. It's a gory, violent, action-packed thrill ride that will appeal to boys and girls, teen and adult audiences alike.

For example, when vampire die, they just don't crumble into a pile of dust, they freaking explode into showers of blood.

After a short training, Jamie tries to save her mother from the crap of the notorious vampire Alexandru who tried to kill him, but Jamie will have very little support from the Department 19. I can just imagine the excitement Will Hill must have felt as his synapses started firing as he answered every subsequent question that arose, making connection after connection and thereby coming up with the idea for the secret branch of the government that is Department 19. It is a complex tale linking several parallel strands; the main character, Jamie Carpenter is coming to terms with the death of his mentor and the fact that his mother was ‘turned’ into a vampire at the end of the first book. We also get to find out how Jamie's ancestor, John Carpenter, first met Frankenstein, saved his life, and then the latter making a vow that goes on to be honoured for generations of the Carpenter family. Jamie’s own mother has been turned into a vampire—and now Jamie will stop at nothing to wreak revenge on her captors.I'm not sure I need to say much more about the plot than that, but I'm not sure I can hold myself back as months after reading this book I am still excited about it.
