I found reading PMLD backwards quite tricky and understand your message that just because I couldn’t do it instantly, it doesn’t mean I’m stupid!

Bryan, aged 12, has severe cerebral palsy, a condition that makes him incapable of voluntary movement or speech. He now uses an alphabet board with the help of his mother which she describes as "the gateway to an unlocked child". It is wonderful that because of Jonathan, those trapped in their own minds can speak for themselves and people will start to listen. My 10 year old granddaughter has just read it and has responded to what she read; it's easy enough for her to read yet with a profound and momentous message which all can understand. I hope that, like Jonathan, with the right support the children that we represent will also be able to achieve their life long ambitions. Its text pulls no punches: “Disabled children with communication issues are not being taught in special schools.

It’s helped me to get a feel for the long term; that there can be things that God is going to be able to bring out of Jonathan’s accident, and the coping with it that we’ve had. Was Jonathan dying as the beautiful field suddenly became his enemy, but Jesus’ strong and reassuring presence was with Jonathan. My biggest fear, my biggest regret and my biggest question is why hasn't my son been given the same opportunities, and is it now too late? Along with his mother, they fight for Jonathan’s right to be heard, to be taught reading, writing, spelling and maths. This starts with a heart-breaking passage from Jonathan's mum, which went into the painful details of the stress and difficulties faced in the early stages of Jonathan's life, particularly in those moments where everyone seemed to give up on him, but she felt the need to keep fighting.

As others have said, this is a book which really stirs the emotions and is very difficult to put down! It’s for us to help him to live life in all its fullness here, but it’s not for us to hold on so tightly that it gets to the point where he needs to go, and we can’t let him. I finished it with huge admiration for his whole family who are obviously very close, but with absolute astonishment at the level of care and commitment of his Mum (who wrote the first half of the book) through all the years of fighting for him, spending time teaching him, reading books to feed his imagination and encouraging him even in a system which put a lid on the expectations of his learning very early on. She had already been surprised by the word ‘slaying’,as it wasn’t even an option in the verb section of the big black folder. And through your campaign “Teach Us Too” you are championing the greatest literary education for every child with the same irrepressible determination that embodies your whole life story.
