For reasons never sufficiently explained, Minerva , Ebeneezer and a third man named Michah maintain an uneasy bond through the years. But it kind of made my heart hurt a bit too much along with the lots and lots of nopes that it bubbled up inside of me.Once I finish welding the customized chain and shackles for him in my basement I’ll be just like Stepheny I’m pretty sure I’m his number one fan.

And not just tropes, but inventions on these tropes – for example, one seriously scary monster is just a henchman for an even worse sort of thing which can appear as a freakin' baby! Reading of their coming together as an unlikely trio was fun and established a strong dynamic that prevailed throughout. In the past, they’re hired by a woman to travel deep into the wilderness to Little Heaven, a community built by a religious movement similar to a cult, and maybe rescue her nephew. Ugh, the descriptions of a child being strangled and eaten by a snake will not leave me for awhile, I can assure you of that. Nick Cutter looks to be trying to carve out a Stephen King-like niche, and while his style isn't really King, you can see the influence.Otherwise, there are plenty of conventions popularized by Stephen King, resulting in books that read like King on crack. Against a backdrop painted in many shades of human evil, from hired killers to religious fanaticism, Cutter strips the whitewash from the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, revealing an unspeakable horror. The religious cult out in the middle of nowhere gave me serious Jonestown vibes and I was glad to read that Cutter actually drew inspiration from this. I'm going to keep this one short and sweet, as I don't care to linger on Little Heaven any more than I have to. I admit that it took a little bit for me to get really into the story, but once the characters were all established and I got a better sense of what was going on, I fell in love and didn't want to put the book down.

If you are looking for something dark and disturbing…in the best way possible of course, Little Heaven is the book for you! Little Heaven” by Nick Cutter will remind you of 1980s Stephen King (or 90s for me, since I didn’t read his novels until then), such as “It” or “Pet Sematary”.

Nick Cutter (Craig Davidson) roared onto the horror scene with his novel THE TROOP, quickly following up on that success with THE DEEP, THE ACOLYTE and most recently LITTLE HEAVEN. Amos Flesher turned out about as horribly manipulative and sadistic as I expected, but he worked well because he was part of a larger story, rather than driving villainous presence. If you are curious as to what the story of Jonestown would be like if it had been mashed together with Stephen King's "IT", then absolutely check this book out. All three of them survive, though unbeknownst to two of the three, a third has a grudge going back to childhood that can only be satisfied by blood.
