Then, players total the cards in their hand for that species, and only the player with the highest sum scores the points for that species. There’s three basic conceits to the game that turn this game into a brain burner that’s much more intense than what its botanical veneer lets on at first. Opportunities are never lost, but the cost of seizing them soon escalates out of sensible consideration. Arboretum is a strategic card game, designed by Dan Cassar and illustrated by Beth Sobel, that challenges players to create the most beautiful path through the garden. You start with a hand of seven cards, and on each turn you will draw two cards from either the deck or your opponents discard pile, play one into your tableau and then discard one.

Every turn you need to discard a card of your own, and so digging through the waste is never going to be a great use of your time. Plant one in your garden, by placing it orthogonally adjacent to an existing tree, and then put one onto your discard pile.I need to give a shout out to Renegade Games for creating the most garish and ugly deluxe edition I've come across.

So I thought everyone was being a bit sensationalist, just big babies getting upset at a bit of direct interaction. You’re going to keep doing this – picking two cards, playing one, discarding one, until the draw pile is completely depleted. You’re going to be left, at the end of the game, with a hand of cards that represent wasted possibilities – those cards usually aren’t just what’s left over. The only place that I would have wished for something different in the graphic design is the score sheet. As you go along, you realize that all information is known in this game, if you’re paying attention.Particularly clever clogs will be able to figure out roughly (or exactly, in the two-player game) which cards are in possession the other player(s). One additional rule is if a player has a 1 in their hand at the end, the value of the 8 in someone’s hand of that same species is treated as 0. So if the card is not in your hand, it's either still in the deck or already in your opponent's hand. When you’re drawing your cards, you’re trying to get cards that will help you, but also cards that might deny your opponents what they need. I'd also recommend it if you love the standard edition and it gets to the table often, as this version has better shelf presence.
