While Chef McNee was living with his host families, cooking and traveling throughout the country, he fell in love with Italian food and culture. In 2012, as the result of a contested margarita making competition between Larry and celebrity chef Joanne Weir, they co-founded Copita Tequileria y Comida together.The novel "Nomad Italian" restaurant was featured in the New York Times' 52 Places to Visit in 2019. Upon graduation, he headed to wine country where McNee continued his culinary education at Ristorante TraVigne in the Napa Valley.
In 2003 he opened Poggio Trattoria in Sausalito as the ultimate expression of his passion for Italy.
