The 9 Lp's are dirty with light blemish, light scuffs and they play all with a light background noise between tracks. Flesh and Blood" was previously recorded by Cash for the soundtrack to the 1970 film I Walk the Line. He lived with the likes of ''Understand Your Man'', ''Banks Of The Ohio'' and ''Fifth Man In The Fire'' all his life, and his performances are relaxed, warm and soulful. The Johnny Cash Unearthed box set was originally issued on CD in 2003, just two months after Cash’s death. Also, maybe the light scuff may have been occured in the transport, the disc can move in the sleeve since it's not enough tight.

The recordings, which run the stylistic gamut from stark balladry to punchy rockabilly to heartfelt gospel to classic covers, offer a stunning encapsulation of Cash's wide-ranging musical vision, and provide a fitting epitaph for his iconic career. Rolling Stone named it as one of the “100 Best Albums of the 2000s” and declared the set "a slice of American culture as monumental, and as enduring, as Mt. Many of the songs Cash recorded during the American sessions were updated versions of songs he had previously recorded. The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin’s decade of recording together, but sadly Cash passed away before receiving the final mixes to approve. The fourth disc, My Mother's Hymn Book, features gospel songs Cash first learned from his mother as a child and was later reissued as a standalone album in 2004.

In terms of the set itself my only complaint is the unnecessary 5th disc featuring previously released tracks from the first 4 American CDs (except for "Thirteen" which is actually a longer alternate take or edit than the version previously released). There are delights throughout: a towering performance of Tom Waits' ''Down There By The Train'', and a spine tingling take on Neil Young's ''Heart of Gold''. This was Cash's final album devoted to previously unreleased performances of faith-based music and hymns, following a long string of such releases dating back to 1959 and individual singles and album tracks even before that. Die Grundstimmung ist allerdings ein wenig depressiver als bei den regulären LPS der "American Recording Sessions" von 1994-2003. Father and Son" was previously recorded by Cash as "Father and Daughter" for his 1974 album The Junkie and the Juicehead Minus Me.
