I have heard of people’s lives being changed by a dramatic or traumatic event – a death, a divorce, a winning lottery ticket, a failed exam. Mostly, we watch the foursome develop their connection and watch how they manage their conflicts and make allowances for each other.

The love between Larry and Sally is much gentler, and sustains them both despite their losses and deprivations.Recollection, I have found, is usually about half-invention, and right now I realise that there is much about Sid and Charity Lang that I either invented or got secondhand. Each is for the other that one unfailingly understanding and sympathetic fellow-creature that everybody wishes for and many never find.

Yes, it’s the luminosity of Stegner’s prose that reminded me of Salter’s Light Years, and that’s another great book! Stegner's powerful but unassuming narrative traces the bond that develops between the Langs and the Morgans from their first meeting in 1937 through their eventual separation on the occasion of Charity's death from cancer. Because this human story was capably written and wonderfully realised, it didn't need any flash bang wallop or bells and whistles. When you’re young and single and carefree you can hang out with whoever you want (whenever you want, at whatever bar you want). The foursome become lifetime friends and the thrust of the story is as much about them as it is the Morgans. This novel not only profoundly moved me, it chimes on in my mind as a carillon of self-contemplation on marriage, friendship and family. We are reminded of this a little later in the novel when the four, with their children off their hands, spend a sabbatical year in Italy, lapping up art and culture. But once we noticed it, we realised that it had been there all along, that what we had thought only the wind in the grass, or the scraping of a dry leaf, was this thing sliding discreetly out of sight. What struck me most though, was how much Crossing to Safety--Stegner's final novel--more than any other novel I've read, seemed a perfect parting gift to the world: as his last piece of art, an elegiac exercise in the epiphanies emanating from the unexceptional, a sort of tuning fork to resound in us revelations found in ordinary lives and that we can yet discover in each of our own. She invites them to their next party, and Larry is stunned by the magnificent picture the Langs make as they answer the door.
