You could feel what the character felt, you cried with them, laughed with them and got angry with them. In 2017, the book was also adapted as a short film parts of which are shown in the music video [6] for the song Pleader [7] by the band alt-J.

None But the Lonely Heart, his second novel, was published in 1943, and subsequently made into a film starring Cary Grant and Ethel Barrymore.

There is a feeling of progressive doom about the whole book, as Huw’s siblings push against their constraints and end up leaving, his sister makes a choice of husband that may not be the best and Huw’s chance to escape may not be taken up.

As we follow life in the Morgan family and the village as Huw grows, so do the slag heaps in the green valley, an indicator that life in the valley is never going to be the same again. And so I can't rate the book very high, because that would be like recommending it, which I don't really. I started the book without reading (or rather rereading) the blurb, and had gone in expecting a mostly tragic tale. There is so much in it that shows up in Appalachia (as we will see next week) and in non-farming towns of the Midwest still today. Several of his novels dealt with a Welsh theme, the best-known being How Green Was My Valley (1939), which won international acclaim and was made into a classic Hollywood film.

I suppose being Welsh, I was predisposed to feel pride at the very welshness of these people, from the singing to the rugby, family and community to the Welsh dialect throughout the book. It reminds us of the life we are capable of living and contrasts it with the life we choose to live.

The point of view is that of Huw, beginning when he is just 6 years old and going all the way to his middle age. And those who can’t make sense of the change have no other ways of coping but to find a new place of their own. I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't warm to this one, and it baffles me as to how this book is so popular. In love with his oldest brother's wife from a very young age, and well aware of his lowly status within the family hierarchy, Huw knows what is his and what is not. A girl was found murdered in the woods, signifying the loss of the age of innocence that Huw associated his childhood with.Appreciated the Guide to Pronunciation of Welsh names that’s in the back of the book, even though it was only somewhat helpful.
