Long's characters are desperate and in deep, deep trouble, dealing with everything from social alienation to a full on apocalypse. She won the Best Newcomer award at the Edinburgh Fringe and has been nominated three times for best show.

The writing and Long’s craft does leave a little to be desired with some more editing having been beneficial.

Peppered with the acclaimed comedian's trademark warmth and wit, the stories collected in Because I don't know what you mean and what you don't feature quirky, richly drawn characters and delightfully unpredictable plotlines. Radio 4 regular Long was the first woman to be nominated three times for Edinburgh Comedy Award (in 2010, 2011 and 2012) and has previously performed nine UK tour. Josie’s writing, just like her stand up, glitters with a joyful bemusement at the hilarity, sadness and peculiarity of being human.

What connects Dawn French, Joanna Lumley, AL Kennedy, Frankie Boyle, James Acaster and Monica Heisey? Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. I like it so much better than when she found improv, and talked to everyone about how life was also improv, and kept discussing the details and rules of specific improv games to me until I felt like a coward for not shouting that I do not and will not ever give a f*** about improv”. I sometimes had a little difficulty with the first person perspective - it wasn’t always clear the gender of the narrator, and the lack of third-person exposition meant that sometimes relationships between people weren’t clear to me. My favourite was 2021, 2021 but thinking back and writing this review three weeks later I can’t really remember exactly, all I know is it follows the survivor of an abusive relationship and I believe she comes into contact with her ex (the abuser) and how it was quite tense.Short stories can sometimes be hard to fulfill because they always give you a taste and end before you're satisfied, but that's not a problem for Josie. But luckily my very dear friend [novelist] Nikesh Shukla did a few sessions of mentoring to just build my confidence up and help me get started.

The book is a mix between literary fiction and pop culture--referencing Instagram and Facebook on numerous instances. I loved London, but I also felt like London wanted me dead,” Josie Long tells me, with a seasoned comedian’s ear for a pithy line. Cocker argues that by understanding – or at least investigating – the beautiful mystery of a bird almost always in flight, we can better comprehend our own place in the world. Josie Long's first collection reveals a natural gift with a frank and poignant tale; teenage experience, community WhatsApp groups and broken family units are picked apart with a wry cynicism at the weirdness and cruelty of life . I got to the end the first story thinking what have I missed and what was that all about and this continued through the book.Opening up this book is like skinny-dipping in the brain of a genius – I never wanted to come up for air. In the final story, “I Don’t Know”, which is a slightly zany take on parenthood, the narrator says “Enough will be alright to keep going.

Comedy doesn’t produce many millionaires, but Long’s still had a pretty successful career by most reckonings. The book is a collection of snapshots that range from romantic to rousing, dystopian to hopeful, satirical to gut-wrenching. If I did have one criticism it would be that I often struggled to differentiate the character voices from Josie's own voice, but given that I love her that really wasn't too much of a struggle for me. This is a collection of short stories that I will keep and dib into in the future because some of the stories by this sharp comedian are brilliant, but frankly, there were others I had no idea what was going on. Each tale paints a life in miniature and offers an escape chute from the catastrophes of modern life.

So in that story, the woman finds this little scrubby bit of land and I really wanted that to be incredibly meaningful to that character, where even just seeing one beaten up fox is so beautiful it makes her feel she could have more from life.
