I know most of the landmarks Katie visits, and the older granddaughter brought it home from her own visit. One of my little pet grumbles is how the British name of Father Christmas is replaced so often for the Americanised Santa. James’s Katie picture book series has been making art an adventure for children worldwide for 25 years. Tonight we reread it (my 9 year old and I) as we are about to spend 5 days in London seeing as many of the sights in the book as possible!

We have all extracted joy from the notion that one of the lions at the base of Nelson's column comes to life and carries Katie all over the place. This would be a lovely way to introduce any child to London, perhaps as a way to calm nerves before a first trip or as a way to reminisce after visiting. Not only is it informative about the features of the incredible city, but the illustrations allow the reader to create vivid images in their head. The lion takes them on a wonderful tour of the city taking in such sights as The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye! There isn't anything about the new buildings and developments for the Olympics, but as 2012 is the Queen's Jubilee it works well for any little ones who are interested in the Queen and where she lives.

We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. At Trafalgar Square they meet a talking stone lion, and he takes them on a wonderful tour of the city taking in such sights as The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye! I am so looking forward to reading this book with my reception class at the end of the day and I look forward to hearing their thoughts. Take a journey through London's rich past with these 10 fully guided walking routes and discover a whole world of incredible history hiding about your eye-line, just waiting to be spotted. The trio take off around London, flying around with the reindeer to deliver all of the presents before the time runs out.

as long as you have a ready excuse for why the Trafalgar Square Lion isn't waking up to fly you around the city any time soon! A wonderful introduction for young readers to delights of the Tower, Buckingham Palace and a host of London landmarks. Featuring many of London's key landmarks, this storybook has become a bestselling introduction to London, and is perfect for children visiting the city for the first time. When Grandma gets tired they stop a while in Trafalgar Square, and whilst Grandma rests on a bench Katie and her brother find themselves going on a magical adventure with one of the Trafalgar Square lions! This uses the same similar concept in most of James Mayhews books when Katie whilst with her grandma and brother visit a museum, Scotland etc. Imagine that you are the Queen, looking out of the windows of Buckingham Palace and you see Katie, Jack and a lion walking past. The story itself isn't particularly thrilling, but we enjoyed it and have read it a few times since then since the real interest is in seeing all the different places they go to. Biography: James Mayhew studied at Maidstone College of Art and his first children's book, Katie's Picture Show was published in 1989. Feelings are important too – young readers will like the touching ending when Katie and Jack hand over a woolly blanket, purchased at Harrods with the last of their pocket money, to keep the lion’s tummy warm.
