I saw a prosperous and richer UK in 2016, with even the small towns looking well-heeled and booming.But hey, I'm still giving it five stars because Westall somehow makes undermining his own plot believable while keeping character growth in tact. Going to the coast] was the poor person's way of going abroad -- standing at the seaside and staring at the ocean. However I just found the book to be a long winded and repetitive whinge about the lack of hospitality and excitement in the coastal towns.

A further theme of sorts is added by the coincidence that, throughout, his journey was constantly interrupted by news of the Falklands War being fought at the other end of the world.
