While definitely a great story, I found it in some instances a bit exaggerated(the disasters Gemma creates) and too easily resolved (the never ending loyality of Alice). Gemma and Alice will forever be apart unless they think of something to help them get through them growing apart. When Alice and Gemma's birthday comes up it is very emotional for both Gemma and Alice because its thier first birthday apart.

This book "best friends" is a delightful and fun story full of new complications at every turn of a page. Sine Alice seemed to move on with her new life in Scotland fine, I didn't feel to sorry for her, but for Gemma I did.

Gemma receives a birthday card and charm bracelet from Alice reassuring her that despite Alice not being able to contact Gemma any longer, they will remain best friends forever. this book was a very inspiring book about these two best friends that have an friendship that could last a life time, the thing is. She is fairly tomboyish, hyperactive and clumsy, who enjoys football, bike riding and spending time with her Grandad. The characters - other than Biscuits and grandad, I found the characters unlikeable and hard to put up with. Gemma often frets that Flora is trying to "take Alice away from her" and becomes highly suspicious of them together.

I really loved this book because I could really share and express the emotions of the character on the story, especially Gemma, since she seemed to feel the most grief over what happened. On the way they are recognized by classmate Billy "Biscuits" McVitie, whose baby sister Polly was baptised that same day at the church that Gemma and Alice passed en-route; he tells his mother, who informs Alice's and Gemma's parents who in turn then catch the girls before they can board the train. In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. I adore the way Gemma is the toughest girl on the block and is in the school football team whereas Alice is the girl who always is voted for school council or is interested in writing and generally listens, where Gemma is more likely to be talking. In the book, Gemma, Alice, and Biscuits' class teacher is Mrs Watson; in the TV series the class teacher is Miss Mancer (pronounced "Maneer"). He moved to Australia due to the fact they had no money, at least in Best Friends they get reunited thanks to Gemma’s Grandad.

Throughout the book, the author makes the reader feel just how distressing it must have been for the two best friends after they learned of their forced separation. In the message in Alice's birthday card to Gemma at the end of the book, it is mentioned that the dynamics have changed between Alice and Flora - Alice was having a birthday party and her mum had made her ask Flora, however Alice didn't like her much now (presumably following Gemma's visit). Everything seems ruined when Alice's father gets a new job hundreds of miles away and the whole family has to move. When Alice's dad gets a new job in Scotland, Gemma is distraught and does everything she can to keep Alice for herself, scared that she'll find a new best friend in Scotland and forget all about her. In the TV series Biscuits' mother is dead; his grandmother is his legal guardian and there seems to be no mention of a father or any siblings.Later in the day, Gemma meets Alice's new friend Flora Hamilton, who is a classmate to Alice at her new school as well as her new ballet class. She has written over 70 best-selling books, and several have even been adapted for TV – most famously The Story of Tracy Beaker. It doesn't matter that Gemma loves soccer while Alice prefers drawing, or that Gemma is always getting into trouble while Alice is a model student and daughter.

Despite Gemma's larger-than-life personality and Alice's quieter, calmer character, the two are inseparable - until that is Alice has to move house, all the way to Scotland.During Gemma's visit to Scotland Flora is disdainful of Gemma's childish ways and tries to get Alice to do what she wants to do. Despite their differences, the two girls spend almost every day together, and on their birthdays they always wish to stay friends forever. Billy "Biscuits" McVitie: The girls' schoolfriend, a tubby boy who loves food, both eating and cooking. In contrast to Gemma she is quite the girly girl, who loves dressing up, ballet and the colour pink.
