Not only will this book remain on my "Favorites" shelf, but it ranks in the top ten books I've read so far, period. The Victorian mansions are wonderfully described and the Alabama sun/setting is so much of a character in this book. Finally, there is a showdown with the elementals in the third house, and a couple more family members are killed. The only reason some of the McCrays are there is that Leigh McCray had married a Savage, and both families are closely tied together because they’re the kind of wealthy people who are joint owners of their own private island.

With the Olympian Comet burning bright across the night sky, Nicole's sleepy town is turned upside down. The atmosphere--unspoiled by "knowing too much" reminded me much of the feeling I get when reading Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows". The characters in the book are so bizarre and just not quite right (which is perfect in my opinion for a horror book! The Prophecy of Shadows‘ tells the story of Nicole Cassidy, who has moved from her home in Georgia to Boston, and is starting at a new school, where for some reason she has been placed in all Honours classes, and her classmates are Witches? Extraños ritos relacionados con la muerte de sus integrantes y seres incorpóreos que los acosan en su casa de descanso son quizá los elementos principales de esta historia. It’s loosely explained that they suspect something supernatural is happening to them that lessens the horror to convince them to go back.

He was good friends with Stephen King, with his wife Tabitha King actually finishing McDowell's final novel. Finally what was everyone's take on the very ending where India explains that she doesn't want to be around Leigh's twins because they are Savages?

But then, 1981 probably wasn’t that different to 1931 to a lot of African Americans, in terms of white attitudes towards them. She met her best friends, whom of which are also the other main characters within the story, their names being Blake (the guy she noticed), Danielle (his girlfriend), Chris, and Kate.

The trio of houses, the sifting white sands, the brackish lagoon, and the interminable Gulf comprise a living, breathing, *sentient* character, one so seductive and malefic that I found myself tightening whenever India (13) and her elder family members arrived there. Hearing McDowell's Luker talk to his mother Big Barbara reminded me powerfully of Brick's frustrating conversations with Big Daddy in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. I also think fans of the ‘ Harry Potter‘ series would enjoy this too, not only down to the storyline being based around Witches, but also because a few of the references to the series that I’ve noticed being made throughout the book: “ an owl hadn’t dropped a letter down my fireplace to let me know I’d been accepted into a special school, and I certainly hadn’t taken an enchanted train to get to Kinsley High. Something horrific that may be responsible for several terrible and unexplained deaths years earlier — and is now ready to kill again .

India McCray is the young inquisitive daughter with an intense desire to know everything about that third house and the first time she looks in the window, when she sees something. The atmosphere was both subtle and complex, the family dynamics were wonderfully memorable, and the plot was a throw back to childhood tales of ghosts and ghouls around campfires on lazy summer nights. Now that these novels are being dusted off, however, I think we’ll be reading him for a long, long time to come.

Today’s book is “ The Elementals” by Michael McDowell, one of my favorite authors who I don’t feel is remembered or recognized as much as he should be—so we’re all going to do that now.Soon after, being that it was summer, most of the family head to Beldame for their summer vacation, which is the same place Marian had just succumbed to cancer and died. A fearful chill gradually creeps up on you almost unnoticed, but not quite, as the history of the place is slowly revealed. The refuge itself is extremely remote being completely cut off from civilisation when the tide rolls in and consists of three large Victorian style houses.
