Coincidentally, an early job in journalism was as a reporter in Essex, covering Depeche Mode's hometown of Basildon. In later years he ventured to the leftfield and now enjoys noise, ambient and experimental sounds with a poignant affection for perfect pop songs. Halo – The Story Behind Depeche Mode’s Classic Album Violator will be published as a paperback book and e-book on 29 September 2022 by Grosvenor House Publishing. So when you’re asking people to recollect something that happened in a studio in Milan in 1989, you shouldn’t be surprised when they don’t remember!

They knew that when ‘Personal Jesus’ was recorded and given to François, they knew it was going to be the single because it was so fundamentally different to anything else they’d ever done.Everything came together at the same time, such as mainstream crossover, artwork, videos, the tour, and of course, the high quality of the production on Violator. Recorded in England, Denmark and Italy between May and September 1989, Depeche Mode's seventh studio album 'Violator' was a landmark record beloved by fans and universally regarded as the band's creative highpoint. Interestingly, despite their respective high chart positions (13 and 6), neither the release of ‘Personal Jesus’ or ‘Enjoy The Silence’ led to an appearance by the band on their home turf's high-profile weekly music TV show, Top Of The Pops. The buzz amongst fans following the releases of ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Enjoy The Silence’, coupled with a confidence in the Depeche camp knowing that the Violator album was clearly a massive step up in its creative output, showed there was the potential for something big – bigger than Pasadena and 101 – to happen.

million copies following its release in March 1990, ‘Violator’ gave the cult British band – Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher and Alan Wilder – the critical acclaim they finally deserved. The adventurous, highly experimental approach that the band took for Violator recording sessions also yielded two of the band’s most recognisable and successful singles in Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence.

If your love/sympathy/interest in the depeche MODE is limited to occasional listening to their music, you know albums, but you don’t collect every color of the vinyl… then sorry, but this book is not for you… yet. Also, I recommend watching Vaughn George’s conversation with Pino Pischetola about the history of the Violator album in Milan.
