Description

In the thirteen darkly audacious stories of Parallel Hells we meet a golem, made of clay, learning that its powers far exceed its Creator’s expectations; a ruined mansion which grants the secret wishes of a group of revellers and a notorious murderer who discovers her Viking husband is not what he seems.

Through this blend of folklore and legend, repurposed to capture modern anxieties, the reader will come across cursed bracelets, severed hands, vampires and femme fatales. I think it's super interesting that you can present a story and offer the audience multiple ways to digest it. Yet, they are terrified of being noticed, like the rat which causes a horrifying shock when he scurries through Stan and Marie’s flat. But, on the whole, the collection had a well-judged pace and it is difficult to pick out a favourite story amongst so many full of such intriguing characters. This endeavour is echoed later in the prose when Tommy, disorientated in the throes of his abundant drug use, expounds to his Uber driver about cavers who “go down into the deep deep cave systems, tiny little tunnels barely the width of their bodies.

It is such a fresh and playful approach to storytelling that you cannot help but be totally enamoured with Craig’s abilities. As Luke chases her through the dilapidating mansion, furnished with all the trappings of a distinctly gothic setting, he suddenly feels as though he is being pursued by somebody, and feels the urge to flee himself. Horror has always been a genre that I have avoided, especially when fantasy is involved as I tend to get freaked out quite easily. In the thirteen darkly audacious stories of Parallel Hells we meet a golem, made of clay, learning that its powers far exceed its Creator's expectations; a ruined mansion which grants the secret wishes of a group of revellers and a notorious murderer who discovers her Viking husband is not what he seems.

Fans of horror (and especially queer horror) should make sure to pick up ‘Parallel Hells’ as soon as they can.I loved some of the stories in this collection, I liked others, and I’m pretty sure I’m not smart enough to understand a few.
