Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. In an attempt to distract themselves, they worked on new material in Avon Studios, as announced by Damon Albarn during the gig at AsiaWorld-Expo, Chek Lap Kok. There’s a double sided giant poster, two printed inner sleeves, a mirror on the rear of the heavy card matt gatefold sleeve and a download card.

The record came sealed and appears to be the above version in every conceivable way (even has the obi), but has no poster or download card. Thankfully, this is the first album released this year that has left me simultaneously pleasantly relaxed and upbeat. However, the entire festival was cancelled for unknown reasons, leaving the band stranded in Hong Kong for an extra 5 days. It wasn’t until Graham Coxon reprised these sessions and presented them to long-time producer Stephen Street, who went on to develop them with the guitarist, that they realised they might have material worthy of a new album. I don't have a clever ice cream or Blur reference to end this review on, but this album is a flavor of music we've been missing that has brought clarity to my cloud-filled album library. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Please note, The Vinyl Whistle accepts no responsibility for any package which is damaged, lost or stolen during transit.
