You want long battery life: At 10 hours, the battery here is relatively low – the JBL Charge 5 doubles it at 20 hours. Even in outdoor conditions, the sound quality is excellent. Highs and mids are clear and free of distortion, while bass is deep and rich. Listening indoors sounds equally good, with clear sound even at higher volumes. One note: When listening to audio books or podcasts, deeper voices can sound a bit washed out due to bass effect. You can read more about it in the full Audio Pro P5 review . Are Bluetooth and wireless the same thing? Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. App control: Some speakers have apps that you can use to access features like connecting to other speakers and customising the equaliser.

First and foremost is the sheer scale of sound that emanates from such a small body. Sound is also spacious and served up with generous levels of bass. It's a remarkable performance and one that will keep everyone entertained when out and about. We test countless portable speakers every year at TechRadar, and that means we know exactly which features and specs to look out for. It's important for us to compare the performance of these speakers against the specs claimed by their manufacturers, which is why we take the time to make sure the battery life and connectivity is as good as the brands say they are. Feature-rich, but does not excel in any one are. Of note are the options to use voice commands, and pair two SoundLink speakers together for double the output. That said, controls are difficult to operate, and voice commands fail to register more often than not. Should you have a home with Bose technology, the SoundLink is compatible with the Bose Smart Home family. Waterproofing is excellent, and the Go XL was able to handle just about anything we could throw at it including tossing it into the ocean.

There’s sadly no in-built microphone, which means you can’t use the XO3 for calls or voice assistant activation, and we’d have liked the option to use the X03 as a power bank, but those minor issues don’t prevent this attractive speaker from looking and sounding the part in just about any modern living space. EDITOR’S NOTE: Sonitrek have now released an ultra-portable Sling edition, designed with easy travel in mind. It carries with it substantial price reduction, but offers fewer features and cannot match the overall volume and bass levels of the Go XL. Powerful Bluetooth 5 signal. With over 12 hours of play time and the most advanced Bluetooth 5 chipset available today, the Sonictrek Go XL is ready to take on a full day of use. Charge in under 30 minutes with included USB-C rapid charging port.

While it’s a little larger than other portable speakers, don’t let its heft discourage you; the Middleton is dustproof and water-resistant to withstand whatever you throw at it and comes with a carry strap to make transporting it easier. Boasting two 3in 15W woofers, two 3/5in 10W tweeters and four class-D amplifiers, it delivers a powerful sonic experience too, and its sound is customisable via physical controls or the Marshall Bluetooth app.

A 12-hour battery life and water and dust resistance makes this an ideal speaker to take to the pool or beach, and it's available in an array of eye-catching colours. It's a shame it doesn't have a port to charge your phone, like some of larger JBL speakers do, but that's not a big deal. Here’s the thing about theSonos Move– it’s so good, you might want to consider it not only as your on-the-go party station, but also as your main at-homewireless speakertoo. Speakerphone: A speaker with a speakerphone lets you receive calls. Some speakerphones have a noise and echo-cancelling feature for better sound clarity. An IP67 rating means you can use it just about anywhere in any weather conditions and there’s even RGB lighting around a ring on the crest of the speaker, which adds a colourful flourish if you’re using it in darker environments. This can sync up with whatever audio is playing via an option in the AI Life app, though the feature isn’t available on iOS. Customisation options are also limited if you’re not using a Huawei phone, but if you are, the Sound Joy audio can be tweaked to your heart’s content. A lot of people overlook sound quality because it can be difficult to wrap your head around sound quality lingo - after all, we can’t all be audiophiles. Sound quality can however make or break your listening experience, and can even make you think your favourite tunes aren’t all that satisfying to listen to.

Customer Testimonials

Almost identical to the original A1, the Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Gen) is an appealing and highly portable Bluetooth speaker that comes with (admittedly flawed) Alexa support without the need for Wi-Fi. Bang & Olufsen isn’t noted for following the herd. In the Danish audio specialist’s stable you'll find a wheel-shaped wireless speaker, a TV that opens up like a butterfly, and an 8200-watt monolithic speaker comprising 18 drivers. Its output could reasonably be described as "premium" or else "innovative" – and the B&O Beosound A1 (2nd Gen) wireless speaker is no exception. Audio is also really strong, and much bigger, punchier and louder than you’d expect from such a small box. Midrange in particular is dealt with in a much more appealing manner than anything else we’ve seen at this price. The only issue is that it can start to suffer from distortion at louder volumes, but based on our head-to-head tests, you’ll have to pay more and invest in either a more expensive JBL Flip 6 or Wonderboom 3 to move up to the next level. Really impressive stuff.
