I was about to tell you, James,’ said William, ‘that my wife is far brighter than I am, which is why she’s the keeper of pictures at the Fitzmolean Museum and I’m a mere Detective Chief Inspector.’ In London, the Metropolitan Police set up a new Unsolved Murders Unit – a cold case squad – to catch the criminals nobody else can. In Geneva, millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner—convicted of forgery and theft—was pronounced dead two months ago. So why is his unscrupulous lawyer still representing a dead client?

I’d enjoy that. Around this time of the morning would suit me, because that’s when my wife will be at her yoga class. But there’s one proviso: should you ever meet her, you won’t tell her what we’ve been talking about.’ Christina, widow of convict and art collector Miles Faulkner, is to marry again to Captain Ralph Neville. William's wife Beth and Christina are friends. Apparently the date of her booked cruise and stay in New York clashed with the only date available for their church wedding, Christina gifts the holiday to Beth and William. William tried to recall how much he’d received when he changed a hundred pounds into dollars just before he joined the ship the previous evening, but he hesitated for too long. As usual in this twisty thriller from the Master of the pen, there's murder, revenge and betrayal I think this book could be read as a standalone, but for the fullest enjoyment I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series. But, the most ridiculous subplots included one of the cops falling in love with a sex worker; they end up getting married because she's pregnant. Seriously.

William tried to remember how much he'd received when he changed a hundred pounds into dollars just before he'd joined the ship the previous evening. But he hesitated for too long. William and his wife are having a rare holiday on a luxury liner at someone else’s expense when he comes across a rich family whose grandson is very much like a young William with a curious mind. When the unthinkable happens William finds himself investigating a tragedy… This was an interesting story and while the telling is a bit choppy as we jump from case to case, I think readers will enjoy this layered novel and its many different locales. Look for this book in stores October 19th in Canada! No, sir, I want to be a lawman. After I’ve spent a year as editor of the Law Review, I shall join the FBI.’ Estate agent, car salesman and funeral director, all of which we were fairly confident wouldn’t be followed by never-ending questions.’

The thing with Archer novels are that the plots are always so well planned out. This one is no different and makes a very entertaining read. On board luxury cruise liner the Alden, a wealthy clientele have signed up for the opulence and glamour of a trans-Atlantic voyage. But the battle for power at the heart of a wealthy dynasty is about to turn to murder. After which, no doubt, you’ll join a well-known legal practice, and in no time be made a junior partner.’The book starts with William and his wife on a transatlantic cruise, meeting a young member of a very wealthy American family Williams skills are called on when the head of this rich dynasty dies on board. I finished this superb novel in a couple of days. Reading until my eyes hurt because I just didn’t want to put it down. My wife and I gave that question some considerable thought before we settled on a banker. I grew up in Shoreham, a small town in England, in the sixties, and the local bank manager was a friend of my father's. So I thought I'd get away with it for a couple of weeks.' In Geneva, millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner – convicted of forgery and theft – was pronounced dead two months ago. So why is his unscrupulous lawyer still representing a dead client? And who is the mysterious man his widow is planning to marry?
