About this deal

City of Mist has quietly become one of the most popular evolutions of the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Instead of one big playbook, players construct a character from four, split between their character’s normal life and the powers of the legend that connected itself to the character. If you've wanted to try out RuneQuest, this is the product for you. If you're a GM wanting to get into something more about a deep, profound spiritual world than killing monsters and taking their stuff, buy it."— OzRPGDice. A gentle learning curve for Glorantha... I have no idea what more Chaosium could do to make the game easier to get into short of sending out RuneQuest referees to go door-to-door offering introductory sessions."— Refereeing & Reflection.

In The Rainbow Moundsthe adventurers arrive at the mysterious cave complex to confront a group of Trolls menacing the nearby village. In the labyrinthine tunnels of The Rainbow Mounds, the adventurers discover an unimaginable new foe. Maps & Handouts

Best RPG boxed sets for beginners

If ‘A Rough Landing’ involved combat and action, then ‘A Fire in the Darkness’ is an investigation scenario. A rash of fires has broken out across Jonstown and everyone is on edge because they fear both arson and the possibility that any future fire cannot be contained and might spread across the city, raising parts of it to the ground. Like any investigation, this is quite detailed, involves a fair number of NPCs, and some clues to sort through and try and work out what is going on. Of course, there is more to mystery and the fires than meets the eye, but with care, some stealth in places, and even some diplomacy, the adventurers should be able to learn what is going on. This is a nicely done investigation which should take several sessions to play out and which should prove interesting to play depending upon the Player Characters’ Passions and the cults they belong to.

The absolute perfect starter set that comes in a box... there are several wonderful starter sets out there but this is going to set a new high as to what it provides." — OrcusDorkus. Chaosium’s RuneQuest team has nailed it! Raising the bar to new heights, they have put together a Starter Set that other companies can only dream of emulating. One with concisely written and focused rules, in easy to understand language supported by copious examples and just the right amount of lore to whet your appetite, yet enough to give you a firm sense of the world in which you are about to embark. It’s further bolstered by a SoloQuest explicitly designed to teach new players the rules along with three adventures intended to gradually build a player’s knowledge through experiential learning. And we cannot forget all the other goodies you get in the box as well. All of this at an affordable price! If you have very snug shelves, you might have trouble fitting the RuneQuest Starter Set on them. However, if you have the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set, some old Chaosium boxed sets like Thieves’ World or Superworld, other tall game boxes like Harnmaster, or any kind of European game books or boxes, then the RuneQuest Starter Set should fit perfectly next to them. The Starter Set for Free League Publishing’s take on The One Ring RPG takes advantage of its Middle-earth setting by focusing on hobbits and their home base. Last but not least is the set of seven bronze-colored polyhedral dice. The dice themselves are nothing special—the type often bought in bulk for cheap. That doesn’t make them bad, just not premier quality. But having said that, they do have decent weight and feel about them, and they roll well enough. Final Thoughts Magic, Myth, and Might in a Box! The RuneQuest Starter Setcontains everything you need to play the world’s best roleplaying game of gods, cults, magic, family, and fantasy! Just be careful if you wander too far from The Shire and too close to Mordor The Lord of the Rings fans can dive straight into the latest tabletop RPG based on the books with The One Ring's second edition boxed set. Learn to play in the best way possible—by playing! “The Battle of Dangerford” is a single-player scenario designed to teach you the rules of the game as you play. Take on the role of Vasana as she joins her Sartarite brothers and sisters in an epic clash against the invading Lunar Empire. Rather than a stripped-down or abstracted version of the rules, the system would be presented as closely to the regular game line as possible. We wanted this to be an easy step into RuneQuest and Glorantha, as compatible with other products as we could make it. The actual content of the adventures is average to good – but the form! Oh the form! The adventures are monstrously overwritten! The text bloat is immense – you'd have to write your own notes and run this from memory, it's almost impossible to use the text as a reference at the gaming table. I'm afraid the authors have no idea how to actually _write_ an adventure, have never seen a well-written one and are just winging it. It's basically short stories. This fills me with dread as to how further RQ adventures will look like (I've bought them all, haven't read them yet). Generally speaking, this SoloQuest was a solid and enjoyable experience. I preferred the solo adventure from the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set, however. Maybe it’s because I’m such a giant horror gaming fan, but maybe it’s because it’s so innovative. It is actually the first booklet in the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set box: it makes you go through a simple version of character creation as part of the first few steps in the story, and follows by teaching you the rules in an interactive way. This makes getting into Call of Cthulhu so easy and entertaining! In comparison, the RuneQuest Starter Set has a more “standard” setup, where you first learn about the rules, then the setting, and then you play a game to see if you got it all correctly. The innovation of having this first game be a solo adventure remains, however, so the RuneQuest Starter Set keeps a leg up on the non-Chaosium competition. I don’t know if Chaosium could have done it differently anyway, since RuneQuest and Glorantha are much more complex to grasp than Call of Cthulhu and, well, Earth… I would love to read a “Designer Diary” about whether they tried it! Book 4: AdventuresThe Starter Set for RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha is coming! Between now and its release later this year, RuneQuest creative director Jason Durall's Design Diary will share insights about the development of this exciting new boxed set which will introduce the RuneQuest RPG and Greg Stafford's mythic world of Glorantha to all-new audiences. Great simplified rules, great intro to Glorantha, great solo gamebook, great adventures, great maps, great pregens... To begin with, the adventure text itself is just a pain to work with. It's very hard to run without rewriting the entire text in your own notes. A starter set should ideally require the GM to just take a few notes and have it's adventure text condensed and easy to reference.
