About this deal

While Aang had the task of ending a war and bringing peace to the four nations in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra’s role as the Avatar was less clear. After seventy years, Aang left the world in relative peace and prosperity, with rapid urban expansion and new technologies. By the time Korra arrived in Republic City to learn airbending, things were not as clear-cut as stopping the Fire Nation from conquering the world. Instead, Republic City was suffering from poverty and gang activity, with conflict brewing between benders and non-benders. The rest of the world also faced complicated issues as the Earth Kingdom was ruled with an iron fist by the Earth Queen and threatened with rebellion and the Southern and Northern Water Tribes headed into civil conflict. Top 500 Graphic Novels: 2018". Diamond Comic Distributors. Archived from the original on February 8, 2019 . Retrieved February 8, 2019. Turf Wars is a graphic novel trilogy set in the Avatar universe, following the events of Book Four of the television series The Legend of Korra. The first graphic novel trilogy based on Korra, it is written by franchise co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino, with line art by Irene Koh and coloring by Jane Bak and Vivian Ng. The series' other co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, acted as a consultant for the novels. The first issue of the series was released in comic book stores on July 26, 2017, and in mass market retailers on August 8, 2017. The second part of the series was released in comic book stores on January 17, 2018, and in mass market retailers on January 30, 2018. The final part was released on August 22, 2018, with the mass market release on September 4, 2018.

These well-meaning but clumsy attempts from DiMartino extend beyond Turf Wars’ queer themes and into the script itself. While The Legend of Korra had an all-star voice cast with the likes of Janet Varney, JK Simmons, and Seychelle Gabriel to bolster occasionally weak dialogue with fantastic performances, Turf Wars can only present the words as written. Conversations and monologues can sometimes feel clunky and awkward as a result. Thankfully, Irene Koh’s art is both expressive and detailed enough to help minimize the damage from these moments. When Korra warns Asami about the Spirit World, she tells her that the ground might spontaneously drop out, which happened to her and Jinora in " A New Spiritual Age". Heteronormative Crusader: Fire Lord Sozin decreed that same-sex relationships were criminal. It also turns out that the Earth Kingdom is pretty tough on non-hetero relationships as well. The graphic novel series was originally planned for a 2016 release instead of a 2017 one and would feature artwork from comic artist Brittney Williams instead of Irene Koh. Sometime during production, artists were shifted and the deadline was extended, but concept art from Williams featuring Korra and a release date of fall 2016 were distributed at a convention Williams attended. [8] The beginning is romantic and beautiful and the whole support of the comic towards LGBT members is astonishing and heartwarming to read. though I hope it also will show some conflict and not only be so light. As mentioned, Korra and Asami’s relationship forms the core of Turf Wars, and, thankfully, it is the best part of the series. Their romance is genuinely sweet and wonderful to see presented with no half-measures or obfuscation. Providing new context for their friendship throughout Korra’s four seasons, while still respecting their personalities and not sanding over their hard edges, it is a satisfying pay-off for fans and a fun dynamic for newcomers. I adore Korra and Asami, they are amazing and they are amazing together. Plus we get to see Korra's parents meeting Asami, great scenes with Bolin, Mako, Kay and many faves from the tv series. So, yeah, Korrasami! Michael Dante Di Martino promised and delivered beautifully. What I didn't get from the original series, which I am not a gigantic fan of but loved aspects of the last two seasons, I got in 'Turf Wars'. No subtext, no poor, barely-there development to leave me cold: Korra and Asami are officially a couple.

Deliberate Values Dissonance: While it's somewhat softpedaled by seemingly making all of Korra's and Asami's friends and immediate family tolerant and enlightened, most of Avatar-verse society in general is (according to Kya, at least) not very appreciative of variant sexualities. The Water Tribes believe in what amounts to Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell, the Earth Kingdom is generally conservative, and the Fire Nation was originally accepting but outlawed homosexual activities during Sozin's time on the throne. note The Fire Nation's current attitude is not made clear, as Kya only speaks of that time without elaborating. The Earth Kingdom were more intolerant of it. Despite Kyoshi being openly bisexual, she wasn't able to effect any change. Asami points out it's been a long time and hopefully things have moved on since then. Acting Unnatural: It doesn't take long for Mako to catch on to Korra and Asami's evasiveness about what happened in the spirit world, but an interruption by Jinora postpones that conversation. The Triads as a whole, and Two-Toed Ping in particular, return after their last appearance in season 2. a b Lovett, Jamie (August 26, 2017). " 'Legend Of Korra' Shows Korra And Asami's First Kiss". Second third presented new problems in Republic City, new villains, citizens with no homes, and human-spirit conflicts the new portal created. It was good, but after that there was another "too much romance part" (thankfully not a long one), but later things got more interesting again as the conflict between some villains and the spirits got heated. That's No Moon: Korra and Asami go mountain climbing in the spirit world, only to find that the "mountain" is actually a large spirit that doesn't take kindly to their presence. Belated Love Epiphany: Asami admits that she realized how she really felt about Korra during their three years apart. When about to leave the Spirit World, Korra recalls the time Asami took her race car driving in " The Aftermath". B, Lauren (August 15, 2017). And they both make a pledge that they want to be together, that's the way it is, and that won't change no matter what anyone thinks about it. It's a kind of strong character moment in-story, but on the meta-level it can also be read as the writers doubling down on the artistic direction they chose, and damn the real-life bigots. Recommended to 'Korra' and non-'Korra' fans alike. To people who love fantasy - spirits, dragons, fantasy action, a diverse array of female characters; as well as race and queer representation this is a dream come true for me - and to people who desperately want to see a glimpse of a bright, hopeful future. For children are our future. Turf Wars Part One' misses a point for being too short and not enough characters getting a chance to shine. But it is early days.
