About this deal

You can make your own tags, or save time by buying these handy Christmas kraft tags instead. What can I do with this homemade mulling spice? To avoid any confusion for non-US readers, when I say apple cider, I'm using US terminology. In the UK, the drink that's most similar is called pressed cloudy apple juice. I have not tried this with alcoholic apple cider. How to make homemade mulled wine Vanilla is also an unusual addition to Glühwein. I really like it in Glühwein – somehow it delivers a smoother taste and an aroma that is more comforting. Brandy: Similar to sangria, it’s also traditional to spike your mulled wine with an extra bit of liqueur. Brandy is the traditional choice, but Cointreau (or another orange liqueur) or tawny port are also delicious alternatives. Tip: Be careful not to overheat your wine! While some wines hold up to heat better than others, alcohol in general starts to vaporize at 173 degrees Fahrenheit (78 degrees Celsius).

Germans even have Glühwein for children– called Kinderpunsch or Kinderglühwein (Kids’ punch or kids’ Glühwein). Of course, it does not contain any alcohol. However, it definitely contains tea. So isn’t it natural to put some tea in the adult version too? Tips for making the perfect GlühweinUse a chai tea bag: In place of the cloves and star anise, feel free to steep 1 or 2 chai tea bags in the mulled wine (preferably caffeine-free, if you are serving this to a group in the evening). Part of our Seasonal Blends range, Mulled Wine is a sugar free blend of crisp apples, citrus and festive spice. You’ll be glad you did in the morning. All the flavour, none of the hangover. Wine: No need to splurge on a pricey bottle — a mid-range bottle of dry red or white wine will do. (Or if you’re making a big batch, this is a great recipe to break out a nicer boxed wine too!) The best wine for mulled wine will be fruity and full-bodied, so that it can withstand the heat and not have its flavor completely drowned out by the aromatics. I recommend looking for a bottle of Zinfandel, Merlot, Grenache, Because after having made this recipe dozens and dozens of times myself over the years, I am absolutely convinced that homemade mulled wine just about the easiest recipe ever for winter and holiday entertaining. Truly. It literally just takes about 5 minutes to prep and can be made either on the stovetop or in a slow cooker. It’s easy to scale anywhere from a “date night” to two…up to big holiday parties with dozens. It’s totally customizable with your favorite spices and liqueurs. And it’s guaranteed to make your home smell absolutely amazing and warm everyone up on a chilly winter night. Simmer. Heat until the wine almost reaches a simmer over medium-high heat. (Avoid letting it bubble in any way. Alcohol begins to vaporize at 172°F, so take care to ensure that the wine does not evaporate.) Reduce heat to low, cover completely, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

Cut oranges and ginger root into 1/8-in. slices, and bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 3 to 4 hours at 170°. Glühwein sweetness is a matter of personal preference. Some purists prefer almost no sugar, others like their Glühwein to be almost syrupy. I like mine a little milder – around the 125 g amount. I find that with the vanilla, it does not need to be too much sugar. Start with a small amount then add bit-by-bit after taste testing to make sure you obtain the level you want. Mulling spices: These vary in mulled wine from country to country, but whole cloves and star anise are my favorites, plus perhaps a few cardamom pods. But my favorite uses for these DIY mulling spices are homemade mulled apple cider and mulled wine. How to make homemade mulled apple ciderOn a more serious note, Glühwein can be quite strong, particularly if you are not used to it. Adding tea makes the Glühwein milder, but the tea does not overpower the flavours of the spices. Homemade mulling spices can be used in many different ways to add those warm, holiday flavors to your favorite drinks and foods:
