About this deal

That was about to change though and from 1991 to 1995, Dublin (three times), Cork (twice), Kerry, Meath, Mayo and Galway would lose to the various Ulster champions. In a sporting context a lot has changed too. Down’s 1991 win meant that the north had four All-Ireland wins all from one county. Tyrone’s victory over Mayo on Saturday has matched that tally while Derry and Armagh have also joined the roll of honour. Down, of course, moved to five following their ’94 triumph, but they haven’t added as much as a provincial title since. Bagnall also consulted 'O Shiol go Blath/ An Dun, The GAA Story' by Sighle Nic an Ultaigh, which he found to be "an amazing resource, it was invaluable. There was about four months' hard work in all, it kept my head away from everything else."

Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Operation Live: Rescuers Inch Closer To 41 Trapped Workers, Anticipate Success Patsy O'Hagan – All-Ireland SFC winner (1960 and 1961) and selector for 1968 All-Ireland SFC winning teamThere were wild celebrations across the county but the voyage came to a disappointing end when Galway's greater experience was the decisive factor in the All-Ireland semi-final. Eddie won two All-Ireland medals with me in 1960 and 1961. He was a very good goalkeeper believe me, always safe, dependable and brave. He was an excellent shot stopper and made many excellent saves. I also played against him many times when Ballykinlar took on Dundrum. These were local parish derbies and everyone was trying to kill each other, but somehow Dundrum never managed to beat us. As late as 2012, Down had a history of not appointing "foreign" managers, though Martin Breheny suggested Down might be the most likely from the cohort of football teams that traditionally appointed a manager from inside to ask for "outside help". [7] Since then, the county has recruited Jim McCorry and Paddy Tally from outside. Down denied him the trophy in 1991 but he has huge admiration for the county, and for Doherty himself:

We extend our deepest sympathy to James' wife Marie, his daughters Delia and Maria, sons Brian, James, Charlie Pat, Daniel and Eoin, his grandchildren, his brother Dan and sisters Gay, Delia and Eileen. HIS name alone is enough to rekindle treasured memories of a time when Down football reigned supreme. The Irish Post Awards go mainstream

It saddens me, especially as some moved on before their time. The passage of time, as we all know, brings loss. Billie Faiers and husband Greg holiday-shamed and accused of ‘flaunting’ their wealth on luxury Dubai holiday As well as his three All-Ireland medals, Paddy won seven Ulster Championship, seven Railway Cup and three National League medals. He was the leading scorer in Ulster for eight seasons and in Ireland for three years. Only weeks before Bobby Kennedy had been to our local GAA grounds at Gaelic Park and I had shaken his hand. He was one of the greatest forwards in the history of the game. Some of his exploits, his confidence on the field, his abilities, were unbelievable; I'm delighted we're presenting his full story to a whole new generation of people, who'll be able to understand who Paddy was and what the Down team of the Sixties represented.

So thanks again for the great football memories Paddy and to you also Tony Bagnall for an excellent book. A towering figure in Connacht football in the sixties, John could play in almost any position. A good player, always fit, no frills or fancy stuff, and certainly could look after himself. Midfield

Not at all, as with all these ‘who’s the greatest’ lists, I was left concerned that I’d inadvertently wronged the many that were close – but not quite close enough to make the final cut. He was our captain in 1968, though he did not play in the second after getting injured. He was a great captain and a terrific leader. Joe placed a great emphasis on fitness and pioneered new coaching practices. He thought greatly about the game and was possibly ahead of his time. He was a very talented player. A brother of centre half, Dan, James was the burly defence-splitting centre forward who created havoc to many a defence. He was the heartbeat of the Down team.
