Amdani’ is a lively series of reading books specifically designed for adults who are learning Welsh. The books have been carefully graded across four different levels – Mynediad/Entry, Sylfaen/Foundation, Canolradd/Intermediate and Uwch/Advanced. The books are graded at four levels for learners – Entry, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, and the aim is to provide learners with opportunities to enjoy reading about a range of subjects. The series is the result of a successful partnership between the National Centre for Learning Welsh and the Books Council of Wales.

Much of her family speak Welsh but Bexi did not learn as a child as she was brought up in England. She is learning through the Dysgu Cymraeg programme. She said: "When I started school my parents were worried that I would be disadvantaged so switched to English. There was still a lot of Welsh around me and I could follow most conversations but I only spoke in English. Liz now uses her Welsh to run a blog and podcast, Liz Learns Welsh, and was invited to make a vlog with S4C Dysgu Cymraeg. The Books Council of Wales’ New Audiences Grant has awarded funding to 43 different projects to create new opportunities and develop new audiences within the publishing sector in Wales, thanks to support from Creative Wales.
She said: "Cwtch. Cwrw. Diolch. That was pretty much all I could say in Welsh until I started an intensive course just over a year ago. Fast-forward a year and I managed to hold a conversation in Welsh on live TV!" The Welsh language has experienced a boom since the start of the pandemic with more people than ever learning through online lessons and apps. These courses are suitable for fluent learners and Welsh speakers and are tailored to the needs of the class. Classes can focus on spoken or written skills. Liz started learning Welsh during the pandemic. Since starting out she has passed the foundation speaking exam, started a Welsh podcast, made a vlog with S4C Dysgu Cymraeg, won an Adult Learning Award, and even spoken on Radio Cymru.Helgard Krause, Chief Executive of the Books Council of Wales, said : “Celebrating reading for pleasure and making books accessible to all is at the heart of our work at the Books Council of Wales. I’m so pleased that we’ll be working with our friends at World Book Day and the National Literacy Trust to make books available through their networks this year and I hope that children, young people and their families will find books to entertain and inspire them.”
Our group did not have a Welsh-speaking actor so I was limited to reading aloud the stage directions and lip-syncing a Welsh song (Dacw ‘Nghariad by Eve Goodman). Clare has always been aware of her Welsh identity, and since 2008, the Welsh language has played an increasingly important part in her life.
