About this deal

If all the sessions and concerts used here and available from the BBC had been released unabridged, it would have been a manageable 12CD set (two CDs for the early sessions and Paris, one CD for Wembley 1975, two CDs each for Knebworth 78, Lyceum 1980, Wembley 1987 and Knebworth 1992, and another for Birmingham 1998). The evolution of Genesis is unique, their sound developed and progressed throughout their career and with multiple line–up alterations in the early years, the classic line–up of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford took shape in 1976. Matrix / Runout (Disc 4): [Universal logo] 3568647 [Universal Logo] AM84429-01 manufactured by optimal media GmbH Matrix / Runout (Disc 2): [Universal logo] 3568645 [Universal Logo] AM84427-01 manufactured by optimal media GmbH The box set is rounded out with performances from the height of the band’s popularity—Wembley in 1987 and the 1992 edition of Knebworth (along with two songs from 1998 featuring Collins’ replacement Ray Wilson). Here, the sense of the band as a global stadium juggernaut becomes almost inescapable. When the ominous, heavily sequenced drone of “Mama” opens the Wembley portion of the program, there’s no longer a sense of a living, breathing band on the other end of your speakers. Across the first three discs, Genesis used size to create a sublime sense of majesty onstage. Here, the scale of the production simply alienates, and listening to this section often feels like being dwarfed while observing a huge, impersonal machine rotate its blades in place.

Rounded out by material from the NEC in 1998 and Paris Theatre and Nightride sessions from the early 70s, as well as the much sought–after encore version of ‘Watcher Of The Skies’ at Wembley Empire Pool in 1975, Genesis ‘BBC Broadcasts’ is a veritable treasure trove. Album – Classifica settimanale WK 10 (dal 03.03.2023 al 09.03.2023)" (in Italian). Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana . Retrieved 11 March 2023. Any fans familiar with the, ahem, unofficial recordings (oft disguised as ‘Italian imports’) through the medium of bootleg albums, the tape-sharing circles and digital file-sharing/torrenting of the modern era, will know a different story. The Movement has become an invaluable source of information and it doesn’t take much digging to reveal treasures that go far beyond the official documents. In particular, the sterling work of TM Productions has seen definitive live recordings become available from Zurich 1977, Chicago 1978, Frankfurt 1981, 1973 (“ the album Genesis Live could have been”, “an outstanding triumph”), and The Lyceum 1980 (surprise surprise). The following list corresponds to our state of knowledge. Only the titles marked in colour are part of the BBC Broadcasts box set. Genesis – Complete BBC Sessions 1970-1972 is a fantastic collection of live soundboard recordings of Genesis taken from five different appearances that the band made at the BBC Studios in London, England between 1970 and 1972. The somewhat harsh highs of the BBC original are effectively softened here, otherwise everything is virtually identical.

So these three concerts all belong to the same category. Of these, these pieces have been officially released so far: Offiziellecharts.de – Genesis – BBC Broadcasts" (in German). GfK Entertainment Charts. Retrieved 10 March 2023. Largely identical to the BBC version, but here they have removed the "dirt" below 60 Hz, but not the mains hum. By the way, Harold the Barrel is the alternative mix of this song, first broadcast in 2007. Additional remarks: The excerpts, which the BBC had broadcast as late as June 1980 on the TV programme The Old Grey Whistle Test, were officially released (with video) on the Duke SACD/DVD in 2007: Genesis are one of the world’s biggest selling and most successful bands of all time. They have sold an estimated 100 million albums and have played to sold–out stadiums and arenas all over the world for decades, most recently with their global sold–out Last Domino? Tour which concluded with a three–night run at London’s O2 Arena on 22 March 2022.

Turn It On Again (B-side of the US Promo 12" of Turn It On Again, 7 May - on the label it says Drury Lane by mistake).
