Description
Other earbuds may do certain things better than the WF-1000XM4 – the Bose QC Earbuds are more effective at reducing the impact of external sound, for instance – but no earbuds get quite as much right as Sony’s most recent in-ear offering.
We found the active noise cancellation to be good and effective enough at dealing with the majority of external distractions. Granted, you're not getting Bose or Sony levels of noise negation, but then you're not spending Bose or Sony level money either. Spend more and you'll get more, sure. Pros: Quite nicely built and finished; big battery life; capable of fairly inoffensive sound Cons: EQ settings flat-out ruin the sound; headband is desperate for more padding With such fantastic sound on offer here, the Bose headphones are a serious alternative to the Sony XM4s at the top of our list. We highly rate their vibrant, lively character and well-balanced soundstage – they can convey bubbling bass, rich vocals and complex drum beats all clearly and individually in one soundstage. The Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones are among the best wireless headphones we've ever tested – but their high price means we think there are better-value options in some cases. Finally, bone-conduction headphones create sound in a different way, using vibrations on your cheekbones to trigger nerve impulses that are sent to the brain and converted into sounds we’re able to hear. If you find other styles of headphones uncomfortable these may work best, and they allow you to be more aware of your surroundings too, which is very handy. Sound quality suffers as a result but that’s a tradeoff worth making for some. The best Bluetooth headphones have surged in popularity over the past few years. People are ditching wired headphones in favour of their wireless counterparts and you’ll be hard-pushed to find a manufacturer that doesn’t include at least one pair of wireless headphones in its product lineup. The latest iteration of Sony’s flagship over-ear headphones is its best yet, with improved sound quality, more effective noise cancellation, and a new “noiseless” design. That design may not be for everyone, but we love the XM5’s minimalist aesthetic and they’re ridiculously comfortable, too. We've tested hundreds of wireless headphones over the years, featuring every feature imaginable. That means we've learnt the key factors that make a great pair of Bluetooth headphones.
The Sony XM4 are crammed with features, including impressive audio upscaling, and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio format, which delivers spatial audio on stereo headphones, plus the LDAC codec that can send a bitrate of up to 990 kbps. However, they don't aptX or aptX HD, so your hi-res audio support mileage may vary. That said, there are some pretty safe bets out there. Apple's headphones are a good option for teaming with Apple hardware; Sony makes a range of excellent all-rounders; and as you'd expect from the firm that popularized noise cancelling headphones in the first place, Bose makes some of the best noise cancelling headphones and earbuds you can buy.
In-ear headphones
We found the battery life here to be solid. The UX3000 lasted for 35 hours from a single charge when we had ANC switched off, and 25 hours when it was switched on. During our testing we found that, from flat, they can be fully charged in around two-and-a-half hours. The other disadvantages of wireless headphones relate to Bluetooth connectivity. In busy areas such as train stations, you may find experience audio dropouts or stuttering. This is becoming less of an issue with every new Bluetooth version though, so isn’t something you should worry about too much. Similarly, wired headphones can deliver superior audio quality via their cabling, but improvements to Bluetooth technology and the advent of advanced Bluetooth codecs are helping close the gap. What type of Bluetooth headphones should I buy? And in practice, the EP-T21S are a determinedly inoffensive listen (which is by no means a given with earbuds at this sort of money). Their sound is a bit two-dimensional, sure, and the midrange is squeezed awkwardly between bass and treble, but the Aukey extract decent amounts of detail and manage rhythms and tempos pretty well. ‘Not a disaster’ at this sort of money has to count as a small win.
The issue is reallyjust the price – they cost a lot more than the WH-1000XM4, but the differences are not totally night and day. It's also a shame they no longer have a folding design for travelling, though that's not a dealbreaker for most.At a glance, the Soundcore Life Q20 compare extremely favourably to the similarly priced Sony WH-CH510 above. They feel better (although not exactly luxurious) and are more comfortable in situ, they have better battery life, and they have active noise-cancelling. At this price, Anker, you are spoiling us. We’re aware that it’s no good expecting perfection from a 30-quid pair of true wireless headphones - but we don’t think it’s asking too much for the hard plastic they’re built from to be the hardest things about them, rather than the sound they make. Last but not least, we considered the cost. We're well aware that premium headphones can be too expensive for some; we're also aware that for some music fans, there's no such thing as an acceptable corner to cut when it comes to audio quality. So we've considered both kinds of listener here, and as a result we believe that every pair of headphones in our guide will make you feel you've spent your money wisely to get the best possible audio experience for you. Multipoint pairing: This allows simultaneous Bluetooth connection to multiple devices, which is useful in numerous situations. Not all that many Bluetooth headphones support it, though. The Anker Soundcore Life Q30 are an affordable pair of over-ear headphones brimming with features. Chief among those features is active noise cancellation, which is very effective for the money and a match for many more expensive alternatives. There are three levels of ANC available and they’re easily switched between via the Anker Soundcore app. During our testing, we really enjoyed listening to the Final Audio UX3000 headphones. This is thanks to their dynamism, detail retrieval and musicality.Whatever music genre you prefer, you'll be happy with the performance on offer from these headphones.
The best Bluetooth headphones to buy in 2023 (on-ear)
First up, there's Bluetooth connectivity. Wireless is a given, but wireless quality is crucial too: we want our connections to be stable and reliable, not to cut out just as we get to the good bits. Wireless connectivity is integral to Bluetooth headphones so we begin testing by evaluating how easy it is to connect the headphones to your audio source and assess the stability of the connection in a variety of environments. One key decision here is whether you want over-ear or on-ear headphones. Over-ears are generally more immersive, and with on-ears you'll need to factor in the fact that they do leak a bit more audio –which might make you less popular on the bus or train.
