I’ve hiked the Rota Vicentina and the Pacific Crest Trail in these. The Rota Vicentina is 90% sand and if hiking the PCT northbound you’ll be starting in the desert. The Altra gaiters kept 95% of the grit and dirt out of my shoes and I very rarely needed to stop and empty my shoes of debris.

The more popular brand, Dirty Girl gaiters are better quality and I’ve heard they’re more durable and they also come in an assortment of designs and colours, but sadly I can’t see them available here in the UK. Bit of a walled garden with the Altra gaiters and the stitching is quite delicate, but they’re designed to fit my Lone Peaks effectively. Altra EGO: Dual-Nature midsole compound with a responsive, yet soft feel for increased energy return. Don’t let a few looming clouds keep you off the trails. With the Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Low 2, you can set out for a hike no matter the forecast. Water-resistant, lightweight bootie construction protects you from the elements, with the same legendary comfort you know and love from the Lone Peak Family. Roomy Original FootShape™ Fit, responsive Altra EGO™ midsole foam, and a grippy MaxTrac™ outsole keep you moving all day. Bag that adventure, even if there are a few raindrops! On the trail I prefer a responsive shoe to run in and find a Zero or close to zero drop the best way to achieve this, however often find that comfort over longer distances has to be compromise. Not the case with the Lone Peak 7 From Altra. With comfort over long distance, no wonder this shoe is popular with trail runners and multiday hikers alike. The thru-hikers favour trail runners have had an update; the Lone Peak 7’s is the latest incarnation of the zero drop legend. Altra says:

On the trail, I prefer a responsive shoe to run in and find a Zero or close to zero drop the best way to achieve this; however, I often find that comfort over longer distances has to be compromised. That is not the case with The Lone Peak All-WTHR Low 2’s GaiterTrap: Hook-and-loop tab allows strapless gaiter attachment that prevents debris from building up beneath the shoe.

The Lone Peak All-WTHR Low 2 have not changed the shoe's main features, a large toe box, a low-profile design and incredible comfort; they have not fixed what was not broken. The new construction, whilst making the shoe look sleeker, also seems to have brought more stabilisation, especially through the heel, with the addition of the stabilisation cradle.Running gaiters are fairly simple in terms of both design and materials, so we prioritized models with widely applicable uses and any special features. The main variations between models are their attachment points and design complexity, so we looked for gaiters with a wide range of weights, heights, and means/location of securing to your shoe. Some gaiters sit higher on the ankle, and some are best suited for wet or snowy trails. We also included styles at a variety of price points, and avoided models that don’t stay attached or require frequent adjustment. Footshape Toe Box: Allows your toes to relax and spread out naturally for more comfort and stability in uphill climbs and downhill descents. With the 7th addition of the Lone Peak not much has changed with the main features, profile and comfort of the shoe, don’t fix what isn’t broken approach very much applied here. The new construction, whilst making the shoe look sleeker, also seems to have brought more stabilisation especially through the heel with the addition of the stabilisation cradle, situated between the midsole and Gaiter Trap at the rear of the shoe. Balanced Cushioning Platform: Places your heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground to encourage proper, low-impact throughout your trail run.

The thru-hiker’s favourite trail runners have had an update. The Lone Peak All-WTHR Low 2 is the zero-drop legend's latest waterproof incarnation. Altra says: Trailclaw: Canted lugs positioned strategically beneath the metatarsals to provide traction at toe off. One of the main differences in gaiter styles is the closure. Some gaiters slide over your foot, and some are open, wrapping around your ankle with a full hook-and-loop or zipper side closure. The open gaiters can weigh a bit more, but they allow a more adjustable fit and are easier to get on and off. The gaiters that slide over your foot are more streamlined, and you won’t have to worry about getting dirt in the closure material, which compromises the effectiveness of the attachments. However, gaiters in this style can be a hassle to get on and off. How We Selected Keep the snow, dust and grit out of your trail running shoes with the Altra Trail Gaiters. I was looking for gaiters which would fit my Altra Lone Peak 4.0 perfectly and when I saw that Altra made their own for their shoes it was a no-brainer.Designed to fit perfectly with Altra trail runners, the front and rear gaiter traps on the shoes are perfectly positioned for them.
