The man is nothing if not persistent, and before long I had stopped thinking about whether it was possible for readers to root for him, and had started thinking about the how. I tried to push the idea from my mind, but Hoon—because this is what he does—soon forced his way back in. The whole series ran out of steam in book 3 and this book, the fourth in the series is weak both in content and plot.

The Hoon stories on the other hand are proving just as dark and brutal as Smith’s, and this one maybe even more so. A larger than life bully with a penchant for bad language, Hoon was a deliberately over the top caricature—a barely human monster who existed largely to make the lives of the other characters that bit more difficult. He swore he’d never set foot there again, but almost four decades after he left, Bob Hoon is finally going home. For example, with the JD Kirk group, a lot of the readers are older and are on Facebook and some were alone at Christmas, so we did a kind of Christmas get-together.Guest appearances by the DCI Logan team are the cherry on the top of this high intensity crime showdown. Do not read this book and drink a beverage as it will squarely land on whatever is in front of you when you roar with laughter time and again.

Reading through the lines was stressful because the narrative lacked mystery and was more like an action movie script. This book was a lot of fun, we got a bit more of Bob’s sister Berta who is rude and aggressive but great with kids (weirdly enough) and of course we got all the Die Hard action of Hoon swinging around killing people and cursing and generally making a mess! It’s another blast of a story – a totally unbelievable but absolutely entertaining episode which appears to be the last.Again if you do not like swearing then by now you should know that these books wont be for you but if you have started here then be warned the language is flying and if the F’s, and S’s and even the C’s offend then please don’t read this one you wont like it. I ended up writing twelve books in that series, we did three spin-off book series and the audiobooks, but it all felt a bit ad-hoc. The Hoon books were always meant to be fun, I mean they go dark at points, but it’s always been me having an absolute blast writing them. And having ripped through both of their series and slowing working through all of Mayhew’s others works I decided to give this one a try. It was almost like a Christmas Special this one, because the cast of the Logan series are in it, it rounds off the Hoon series, it’s kind of a big explosive action-packed ending with all the characters the readers have come to love over the course of the series, with a bit of social commentary on male entitlement in there too through the villains.

I am looking forward to reading more of the Logan and hopefully Hoon novels and books from Kirk’s other pen names. If you’ve ever thought that Die Hard would’ve been improved by making Bruce Willis’s character a psychotic, foul-mouthed Scotsman in his mid fifties, then this is the book for you! Bob and Berta, the dream team, against an army of killer Santas, what more could anyone want in a book? After reading the first book in the DCI Logan Series, A Litter of Bones, I picked up the first Hoon and the next few Logan. Long time JD Kirk fans will be glad to know that DCI Jack Logan and his team feature as does Hoon's sister, the equally obnoxious Berta and Skye's most notorious one-eyed Liverpudlian arms-dealer Iris.It is an excellent read for fans of Reacher and Bourne, or anyone who loves great action flicks or books.
