Description

The subsequent dynastic struggles of the Angevins and Plantagenets heralded the great age of English kingship under the Tudors and Stuarts, who united the crowns of Scotland and England, before the Hanoverians combined personal rule with parliamentary government, ushering in the modern age and the royalty of today.

A bit on the fluffy side, but as always for a book like this you wont get a lot of detail on specific monarchs just a good general picture of their reign. The swift run of this litany by audiobook was kind of exhilarating and its punchiness of absurd little facts in between momentous events made me smile a lot. This seems a great deal more complete and as such makes this a far better book, even though the individual bios are about equivalent once we get to where there is overlap. Year-by-year chronologies reveal the major events of each monarch's reign, while family trees trace the royal lineage and claim to the throne of each royal house. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever wondered how it all happened without having to delve into too many details. Those familiar with the topic won’t learn anything new and therefore the book is only strongly suggested for general readers who simply want to be debriefed.

A mini guide to the life and legacy of Queen Victoria, complete with colour illustrations and photographs. I have never been overly interested in the kings and queens of England but thought this was a gap in my knowledge of history, so this book was a great overview of each potentate starting with William the Conqueror (1066) up to Elizabeth II. Beautifully illustrated, this book includes family trees and details of where and when each monarch was born, where they were crowned, the dates they reigned and where they are buried. Not only have I learnt a lot about the monarchy, I have also really enjoyed these intriguing, often larger than life and stranger than fiction, stories! In his lively biographies, David Williamson's paints a vivid and sensitive portrait of each monarch, revealing the dramatic events and controversies that surrounded them. The photographs, which span the colours of the rainbow and a century of style, are gloriously accessorised with captions and commentary by.
