His appearance is extremely similar to his counterpart, Rowley Jefferson, being visually skinny and short for someone who looks like a middle school kid. Greg was a fan that there were monsters in the book but wasn't a fan of the message and Rowley should cut out that part. Yet, fate had other plans for Roland one early morning when an unusual sight captured his attention. Against all odds, snowflakes gracefully descended from the sky, blanketing the surroundings in an ethereal white layer during the height of summer. Excited by this magical occurrence, Roland couldn't contain his enthusiasm and rushed into the kitchen to share the news with his mother. To his surprise and dismay, she was nowhere to be found. Greg says that trolls eating pixies is "the Circle of Life", a reference to the opening song of The Lion King.

Coming to the book now, while I preferred the first one, this is quite funny in a silly sort of way. Don't they deserve to be the face of the story too? Haven't they been sidelined because of some twist of fate or a required plot point? And more importantly, aren't they protagonists in their own story? So why should the story be all about the so called heroes or our protagonists? Kinney is right up there with J K Rowling as one of the bestselling children's authors on the planet'- Independent Shae'Vana is similar to Mayor Lionheart in Zootopia. Both were initially thought to be the main villain because of their questionable actions (Shae'Vana steals the map to the ice fortress and Lionheart secretly imprisons savage predators) but later revealed that their actions were to protect others and were simply framed by the true villain (the One-Eyed Wizard and Bellwether respectively). Once upon a time, in an era fraught with peril, there resided a young boy named Roland. Despite the looming dangers beyond the confines of his village, Roland's heart was filled with an insatiable longing for thrilling adventures, much like those his beloved grandpa had embarked upon in the past. However, his parents, concerned for his safety, insisted on keeping him within the safety of their home, directing him to spend his time playing the flute instead.Greg provides more ideas mostly involving different versions of Garg. Greg points out a lot of geographic problems with Roland's map like a river that goes in a circle. Rowley counters Greg's criticisms by saying that this is a fantasy book but Greg says the map wouldn't have real places such as the North Pole. Rowley tells Greg that he hope Garg and Roland will meet Santa on their journey but Greg would quit if that happens. This made Roland mad and took a step towards him however was hesitant to make a move. Roland watches a fight go down where he ended up being trapped along his group in Righty's hand. About to run out of oxygen, his mom comes out of nowhere thus releasing them. The One-Eyed Wizard took a step towards her raising his wand however Roland overcomes his hesitation and stabs the Wizard turning him into a good guy. He is Jeff Kinney’s favorite character, which is what part of what inspired him to write Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson's Journal. Roland was a happy boy that resides in his village being raised under the roof by two loving and caring parents. As a child, he always wanted to go on adventures just like his grandfather once did, but the world outside the village was too dangerous so he spends his time reading books about legendary tales of his grandpa's adventures and spending time practicing the flute despite never complaining about it even if he doesn't enjoy it. He also spends a lot of time hanging out with Garg.

Rowley starts his diary by explaining that he started writing in one because his best friend, Greg Heffley, owns one as well. In the second entry, Rowley shows his diary to Greg, who accuses Rowley of copying him. Greg then comes up with the idea that Rowley's journal should be Greg's biography. Rowley complies, and changes the title of his diary from Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid to Diary of Greg Heffley by Greg Heffley's Best Friend Rowley Jefferson. Simon, Scott. "The Wimpy Kid's Best Friend Gets A Diary Of His Own ... And He's 'Awesome' ". NPR . Retrieved 15 April 2019. In the online book, Rowley is said to own a PlayStation with 42 games. However, in the movie, Rowley is shown to have a Wii, meaning that he probably upgraded his console.

Archer Archetype: Shae'vana subverts the trope in that, while she is a master archer, she is not a loner and is emotional enough to fall in love with Christoph. Rowley's best friend Greg Heffley has chronicled his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals. Now it's Rowley's turn to give his side of the story.

It Will Never Catch On: Greg doesn't think Roland is a very interesting character, and early on Rowley suggests he can be a wizard instead of a peasant who plays the flute, only for Greg to tell him that "no one would read a book about a boy wizard."

Or as in this context, what is Greg without Rowley? The latter, who mostly comes off as a stupid comic relief in the Wimpy Kid series, gets to share his own viewpoint via the Awesome Friendly Kid series. Unfortunate Implications: invoked Discussed in-universe a couple of times. Greg shoots down a Save the Princess plot because not only is it cliche, but Rowley will get angry letters from girls calling the plot sexist. Greg also disapproves of the decision to turn the likable token female elf into a thief because girls will protest the perceived sexism outside Rowley's house. This turns out to be a moot point, though, since Shae'vana was Good All Along and apologizes for stealing. Prequel: Early on, Greg proposes one to Rowley's book, featuring Garg as a baby to sell dolls of the character.Throwing Your Sword Always Works: In the climax, Roland successfully throws his magical sword Jeremy at the One-Eyed Wizard to turn him nice. Exaggerated in that Roland has not actually used the sword, or any sword, at all up to this point!
