I'm in agreement with Angus in that I believe that the whole awning rail should be removed before using new sealant. It's not a major job and it will ensure that all traces of moisture and other dirt/contaminants are removed, I most humbly apologise, but the original poster did mention a fact other than the original question. That fact, in my opinion, was worth comment as I have had experience of this whole sealing issue. In view of the fact that this material has been discussed before and pretty much universally found to be wanting, I would regard it as irresponsible to suggest that the material is in anyway suitable for his application.

Maybe I should just shut up and let, potentially, expensive mistakes be made? That is not my idea of helping people but I think we should let this subject return to the topic, FAO Admin - Sorry if I have stepped out of line here, but I felt I had to answer Angus.
