Also, “the journals” (as opposed to selections) have not been published yet. The West Yorkshire Archives Service is in the proces of publishing the transcriptions online, volume by volume, and at the moment have got up to mid-1824. Wednesday 20 November [Halifax] At 12:40, too George in the gig & drove to Mrs Taylor’s. Sat for my likeness perhaps 1 1/4 hour. Very well satisfied with the sketch. There is something so very characteristic in the figure. Paid for it, 2 guineas … Neither Mrs Rawson nor Catherine thought it a good likeness. Found great fault with the mouth &, at first, with almost every part of the whole thing.

Gentleman Jack: A biography of Anne Lister, Regency Landowner

You descend to Buxton down a very steep narrow road with an ill-fenced off precipice (the case in many other parts of the road) on your right. The appearance of the town is very singular – surrounded by rude, bleak, barren lime-stone mountains covered with lime-kilns. LGBT Victorians: Sexuality and Gender in the Nineteenth-Century Archives. Simon Joyce. 2022. Oxford University Press . See chapters "Introduction", pp. 1-25, and "On or About 1820: Modalities of Lesbian Emergence", pp. 31-70. See chapter "Anne Lister of Shibden Hall 1791-1840".Even though some of this book was boring I truly felt validated reading about Anne and Ann. I also felt inspired by her story (and her finding her wife at 40 gives me so much hope for the future). I also just loved the HBO series starring Suranne Jones (who is so hot ma’am I love your work) and is on the cover of this book - which I’d usually find annoying but I don’t mind since she’s hot. Worse, the biographer is making blatant value judgements along the way, without at any point engaging with the context in which her subject lived. In the last third of the book, she is openly derisive when describing Lister’s activities. Ellis-Petersen, Hannah (24 November 2016). Anne Lister – An Introduction – Catablogue". West Yorkshire Archive Service Blog. 18 September 2019 . Retrieved 19 June 2022. Work by Dorothy Thompson and Patricia Hughes in the late 1980s at Birmingham University's Department of Modern History resulted in translation of much of the code, as well as discovery of the first juvenile Lister diaries and decoding of the other two Lister codes. [ citation needed] Hughes self-published Anne Lister's Secret Diary for 1817 [54] (2019) and The Early Life of Miss Anne Lister and the Curious Tale of Miss Eliza Raine (2015), [55] both of which make extensive use of other materials in the Lister archives including letters, diaries, and ancillary documents. In 2011, Lister's diaries were added to the register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. [18] [46] The register citation notes that, while a valuable account of the times, it was the "comprehensive and painfully honest account of lesbian life and reflections on her nature, however, which have made these diaries unique. They have shaped and continue to shape the direction of UK Gender Studies and Women's History." [46]Muriel M. Green’s “Selected Letters” shed light on Anne’s developing character and maturity starting with a precocious letter at age 9 to her beloved Aunt Anne, and ending with a final draft letter to her long-term lover Mrs. Mariana Lawton in 1840. I’m sure I’ll also soon buy the two Helena Whitbread volumes, exploring the diaries of Anne’s earlier years (and all her many girlfriends!), The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (previously: I Know My Own Heart), and The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, Volume II (previously: No Priest But Love). a b c Crampton, Caroline (5 December 2013). [46] It then shut down again and resumed filming in the summer of 2021. Suranne Jones confirmed that filming for the second series had concluded on 4 October 2021. [47] Scenes in episode six were filmed at one of the historic mines in the Shibden Valley, near the Bare Head Tunnel. [48] Release [ edit ]
