Dust can also cause pencil jams over time, as it can accumulate in and around the clutch and prevent the proper movement of the internal components. Pentel – GraphGear 500: We loved the GraphGear 1000, but its little brother didn’t make the same impression. We found the 500 to be dull and fragile, with lead that breaks too easily and a lead changing process that’s too time-consuming. This one isn’t worth paying over five dollars for. Retractable vs. capped: Standard mechanical pencils are retractable, but if you want to look more polished in the boardroom, Pentel makes a capped version. Push the clearing rod into the hole where the lead comes out of. Push it all the way in but don’t be too forceful. (If you encounter any real resistance you have a badly jammed pencil and should read below.) Lead cushioning: Some mechanical pencils use a lead cushion or guard that reinforces the lead against rougher writing styles. If you’re aggressive with your writing utensils, you may want to consider it.

Originally established as the Masaki Pencil Manufacturing Company in Tokyo in 1887, the Uni Mitsubishi company manufactures the famous Kuru Toga mechanical pencils. But the brand is also known for its other pencils, including regular pencils, ballpoint pens, etc. Uni Kuru Toga Review Uni Kuru Toga Roulette is a premium version of the fantastic Kuru Toga self-sharpening mechanical pencil. The 0.3 mm tip size is perfect for detailed lines and marks but can break easily. In contrast, the 0.5 mm tip size is ideal for tasks that require greater precision, like drafting. But if you have a bigger handwriting and are not involved in precision work, opt for the 0.7 mm option. Your first instinct will be to shake the pencil and push the button a lot. If that worked you wouldn’t be reading this article so you should stop that before you make things worse.Different variants may use varying materials, such as plastic or metal, for the construction, but due to the similar design, they are all comfortable to use even for long periods. 5. Sliding Lead Sleeve Uni-ball was founded in Tokyo, so it’s no wonder that its name is Japanese. The Kuru Toga was named with a Japanese portmanteau of “rotating” and “to become sharp.” This aptly describes the pencil’s rotating lead mechanism which keeps lead, you guessed it, consistently sharp. For this reason, we think it’s one of the best mechanical pencils for writing longform.

This mechanical pencil is available in multiple tip sizes, including 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.7 mm. It means that it can be used for a wide range of purposes, including sketching, writing, doodling, drawing, drafting, and more. To make it easier to hold the pencil for longer periods, the Delguard mechanical pencil comes with a textured grip. This provides greater comfort than regular non-textured options and reduces hand fatigue. Additionally, a better grip reduces the chances of the pencil falling down. 3. Refillable Eraser You won’t find such features when comparing other mechanical pencils, like the Rotring 800 vs. Pentel Graphgear 1000. Product Features 1. Double Spring Mechanism

Some people say that pencils with plastic clutches jam more frequently than ones with brass clutches, but generally we haven’t found this to be true. The factors above, and the overall quality of your pencil and lead will be much more of a factor than the material of your clutch. Pencil Cleaning Rod If your pencil doesn’t include a cleaning rod you can try to find a thin piece of metal wire or safety pin, but this can be very tough to do, especially for 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm pencils. You can get creative with this and try something like a very skinny pipe cleaner, but just make sure that whatever you use for the job isn’t going to make things worse or leave any fragments inside your pencil. Pentel PPE-2 eraser with cleaning rod Staedtler – Silver Series: A pencil with the name “ Silver Series” (and a price point of over ten dollars) invites some big expectations, and for the most part the Staetdler didn’t disappoint. It’s available with an extra-sharp 0.3mm size and writes precisely and smoothly. Like the rOtring, this is a technical pencil well-known among architects, planners, and designers. Our testers’ biggest complaint with this pencil was the grip; most found it somewhat uncomfortable. If you’re not writing longform content though, this pencil might still be for you. Look at the clutch (the part at the front of the pencil body that holds the lead), is it moving freely? Are fragments jammed inside? Hold the pencil right-side up and push the button. Your lead will fall out, but so will anything that could jam the pencil.

Cost: Mechanical pencil costs can vary dramatically. But just like we learned testing pens, the most expensive isn’t always the best. You should be able to find a mechanical pencil you love for just a few dollars or less.Open the clutch, either by pushing down the pencil button. Alternatively this might require pushing the pencil down (pushing the top button) while pushing a small collar down

Jamming happens more often with smaller diameter lead pencils, such as 0.3 mm, but it can happen to any drafting or mechanical pencil. Harder leads (for example 2H or 3H) are more prone to breaking and more likely to jam a pencil. It means that these pencils can last for a long time before they need to be replaced. Additionally, unlike other brands, the Zebra Delguard pencils can be easily used by people who prefer softer lead. Materials and aesthetics: Just like other writing utensils, there are an array of colors and styles of mechanical pencils available. You can get ones that resemble a pen or a conventional woodcase pencil, or you can get something bright and colorful. As a general rule, don’t assume that the quality of the pencil’s “look” is equal to how well it writes. How we tested The Delguard mechanical pencil from Zebra has a double spring mechanism that helps protect the lead from breakage. This is because while one of the springs helps reduce vertical pressure, another reduces the pressure exerted diagonally during writing or sketching. So, the overall pressure on the lead is significantly reduced, and the chances of breakage are minimal. 2. Textured GripYou can spot the Kuru Toga logo inside the grip section or under a window in the barrel. It's printed on the rotation mechanism—which comes in different colors depending on the lead size—so you can watch the logo turn and rest assured that your Kuru Toga is working properly. Alvin – Draft-Matic: The Alvin, another “luxury” pencil at over ten dollars for one, disappointed us. It’s sleek and cool looking, but it’s uncomfortable to hold, it’s too hard to change the lead and it made our writing uneven and scratchy. The bottom line Some variants of the Kuru Toga have a lead grade indicator that makes it easy to know what lead is being used. This small transparent window on the barrel allows you to see inside and is another one of the features distinguishing these pencils from the competition.
