The main takeaway from Stepping Up, for me, is to stop looking to the government to solve problems -- whether they are local or global. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope – Robert Kennedy.

Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood - Goodreads

This book walks through the following stages of a man’s life: boyhood, adolescence, manhood, mentor, and patriarch. With a little help from her best friend Jory (purely platonic, of course…) and her lovely, lonely next-door neighbour, Albert, Beth is determined that this time she’s not giving up.and her lovely, lonely next-door neighbour, Albert, Beth is determined that this time she's not giving up. She's not got her career on track, her longest relationship is a platonic one with Jory her best friend since school and her parents still treat her like a child - something she secretly doesn't mind because her dad gives her lifts whenever she needs and helps sort out her car insurance. It is important as we go through life that we are always working on ourselves, learning new skills (physical and mental), and growing. Having never been responsible for anyone – or anything – it’s not long before she feels seriously out of her depth. It had some jewels of wisdom and the over all message of "step up and so something you won't regret it is a good one".

Stepping Up – The Bookery Review: Stepping Up – The Bookery

With a cranky old neighbour to contend with, a mother with extremely high expectations, yet with no hope that Beth will deliver, and a best friend who seems to be drifting away, at a time when she needs him more than ever. A single woman who can't commit to a job, or a relationship, suddenly thrust into the role of mother/aunt, looking after her teenage niece and toddler nephew. If you treat people like adults, they will act like adults – Dennis Bakke, former CEO, AES Corporation.

The novel is about how Beth Pascoe, an early 30s member of the 'boomerang' generation, living at home, lurching her way from one job/hangover/failed date to the next until a tragedy strikes her close-knit family and she finds herself the sole care-giver to her fourteen year old niece and toddler nephew. Dennis Rainiey gave lots of solid advice, but there was not a lot of verses and Biblical application.

However, it is the sort of movie/tv show I would watch, so I was ecstatic to be given the chance to read this, and I loved it! Actually I find Staes' work an excellent addition to Izzo's Stepping Up as even the most naive person who believes he/she can change the world will bump into the mechanisms described by Staes. If you're tired of being victimized and ready to make a real difference, take responsibility and step it up. For starters, the book never attempts to differentiate American cultural manhood from biblical manhood. The characters are brilliantly drawn and I could picture myself at their dinner table and rolling my eyes along with Beth at her mum's interfering comments and finding comfort in her dad's words of wisdom and solid support.
